Beyond Racing: Resilience and Remembrance in Italy
30/05/2026, Varese, Italy - The 13th FAI Sailplane Grand Prix of Italy has concluded, closing a chapter on one of the most difficult and profoundly emotional weeks in the history of our sport.
What began as a fierce battle in the skies over the Lombardy region transformed into a powerful testament to the strength, unity, and resilience of the international soaring community following the tragic loss of our dear friend, Jon Gatfield (YO). We paused, we mourned, and ultimately, we made the collective decision to return to the skies, because flying is what we love most, and it is exactly what Jon would have wanted us to do.
This week, we flew for Jon. We tried to find our rhythm again. And we witnessed some of the most beautiful and tactically demanding sailplane racing in the world.
Crowning the Champion: Luka Žnidaršič
Through five punishing races, navigating not only complex airmasses but heavy hearts, Luka Žnidaršič (LZ) emerged as the overall champion of the Varese Grand Prix.
Luka flew with incredible precision and tactical brilliance throughout the week, securing 19 points to claim the top step of the podium. From his bold early breakaways on the southern ridges to his masterful energy management in stable air, his ability to find lines in difficult conditions was an absolute masterclass.
The Road to the World Final in Chile
The stakes in Varese were high, with the top two pilots earning their tickets to the ultimate stage: the SGP World Final in Vitacura, Chile.
With his overall victory, Luka Žnidaršič has firmly secured his qualification. Joining him on the journey to the Andes is Michael Reiner (MR). Michael’s incredible patience and masterful victory in the final race of the week vaulted him into second place overall with 17 points, earning him the second qualifying spot. Both pilots have proven their exceptional skill and will be formidable competitors on the world stage.
