Patience and Precision: Oliver Ramsay Secures Race 2 Victory at Lasham
09/08/2026 - Lasham, UK - The British skies tested the patience of competitors and organizers alike on Day 3 of the FAI Sailplane Grand Prix of the UK. Morning showers threatened to disrupt the schedule, keeping the grid empty until after the 10:00 AM mandatory pilot briefing. However, as the weather window finally materialized, the day evolved into an intense, action-packed afternoon of world-class soaring.
Setting the Stage: Tasks and Start Line
With the weather clearing later in the day, the competition director set challenging, fast-paced routes tailored to the afternoon's atmospheric conditions. The official FAI Sailplane Grand Prix class was assigned a demanding 158 km task, while the concurrent Lasham Grand Prix class tackled a slightly shorter 138 km course.
Once the showers passed, the Lasham launch operations swung into high gear. The fleet was efficiently towed into the sky, setting the stage for a tactical pre-start sequence. The official start line opened precisely at 14:15 LT, with a strict maximum start height set at 4,000 feet. Pilots had to carefully manage their altitude and energy, positioning themselves perfectly to maximize their entry speed through the gate.
Intense Skies and Podium Finishes
From the moment the clock started, the afternoon was defined by aggressive, head-to-head racing. Pilots battled for every available second, utilizing the recovering thermals and navigating the technical English skies.
In the official class, the day belonged to Oliver Ramsay. Piloting his LS8, Ramsay delivered a masterclass in reading the post-frontal conditions to claim the top step of the podium. He was closely followed by Tom Arscott and Ian MacArthur in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive leaderboard.
Race 2 standings:
In the concurrent Lasham Grand Prix class, Tony Cook claimed the day's victory, expertly navigating the 138 km task to secure his own spot at the top of the daily standings. Congratulations to all of today’s finishers for their exceptional flying in a challenging weather window.
Looking Ahead to Race 3
With Race Day 2 officially in the books, the competition at Lasham is truly heating up. The pilots are currently resting and analyzing their flight logs, preparing to do it all over again. We are optimistic for another excellent day of racing tomorrow. As always, grid times, tasks, and live coverage links will be posted as soon as they are finalized by the organizers.
