The Italian Job: SGP Series 13 Takes Flight in Varese
The wait is over. This Sunday, May 24th, the FAI Sailplane Grand Prix officially returns to the skies with the launch of Series 13. We start the series on legendary ground. For the 8th time in history, the breathtaking skies of Varese ( Aero Club Adele Orsi (ACAO)) will set the stage for high-speed racing.
Since welcoming its first Grand Prix in 2011 (Series 4), Varese has become a cornerstone of the SGP. It is a place where champions are made, famously hosting the 2015 World Final where Maximilien Seis clinched his very first World Title.
Set against the spectacular, cinematic backdrop of the Pre-Alps and the shimmering expanses of Lake Maggiore, the first qualifying round (Q1) promises an explosive start to the season.
Episode 1: Tradition, Strategy, and the "Chess Match"
Varese demands far more than raw speed; it is a tactical crucible. As we prepare for our opening chapter, the focus lands squarely on the complex "chess match" that defines alpine soaring.
The Q1 grid features a compelling mix of defending SGP veterans and hungry rookies eager to make their mark under the new Series 13 wing-loading rules. Stayed tuned to know more about our pilots in the coming days…
To cross the finish line first, pilots must constantly evaluate the shifting energy lines of the foothills, leading to a fascinating split in race strategy:
The Mountain Masters: Exploiting the powerful, but often turbulent, thermal systems hugging the rocky alpine ridges.
The Flatland Gamblers: Taking calculated risks on the lower terrain to force high-speed, direct glides over the valleys.
Expect breathtaking visuals this week. Fans following the event should keep a close watch for those defining, high-stakes moments as the 18-metre class gliders skim the surface of Lake Varese on their final tactical glide to the finish line.
Luxury, Legacy, and Italian Aviation Heritage
The FAI Sailplane Grand Prix of Italy perfectly marries high-octane sporting action with a distinct touch of elegance. Situated right on the doorstep of Milan, the event serves as a natural activation hub for the premium and luxury markets, drawing eyes from well beyond the traditional aviation sphere.
Furthermore, we are racing in the absolute cradle of Italian aviation. The Lombardy region has given birth to some of the most iconic aeronautical engineering in history. That deep-rooted heritage of aerodynamic innovation and pure passion for flight is palpable on the grid at Calcinate del Pesce.
Looking Ahead: The Road to Lasham (Q2)
While all eyes are currently on who will conquer the Italian Alps, the SGP calendar moves fast. Following the crowning of the Varese champion on May 30th, the series will immediately shift gears to Q2 at Lasham, UK, starting June 7th.
Swapping the mountains for the English countryside, Lasham will present a radically different test. Immersed in rich British aviation legacy, Q2 will challenge our pilots with high-density airspace and the highly nuanced, weather-dependent demands of pure flatland racing.
Follow the Action: Don't miss a second of the Series 13 opener. Live tracking, daily race reports, and expert commentary kick off this Sunday. The focus of this opening event will be on Social Media as we redefine our standards with the newly created SGP Media Group.
