Tragic Loss at the FAI SGP of Italy: In Memoriam Jon Gatfield

25/05/2026, Varese, Italy - It is with profound sadness that the FAI Sailplane Grand Prix organization reports the tragic passing of British pilot Jon Gatfield (YO) during the 13th Series Opener in Varese.

During the second race of the competition, Jon was involved in a fatal accident. Fellow competing pilots flying in the vicinity immediately alerted event organizers to the situation. Search and Rescue (SAR) operations were deployed instantly, with a helicopter, and emergency responders reaching the accident site within minutes.

Following the notification of the incident, Race 2 was quickly cancelled. All remaining pilots in the air were safely directed to return to the airfield, as the organization's sole focus shifted to the emergency response efforts and the well-being of the competitors. Despite this rapid and coordinated response, we have lost a deeply cherished friend and dedicated pilot.

A Legacy of Skill and Camaraderie

Jon was a respected veteran of multiple Sailplane Grand Prix events and a highly accomplished aviator. Flying his AS 33 Es, he consistently demonstrated exceptional airmanship, tactical brilliance, and a profound, enduring passion for our sport, particularly SGP.

Beyond his undeniable talent in the cockpit, Jon was universally recognized as a sensible, generous, and incredibly kind man. His warmth, sportsmanship, and readiness to share his knowledge enriched every competition he attended. We have lost not only a great pilot but a true friend. Our most heartfelt condolences go out to Jon’s family, his friends, and the entire British gliding community during this devastating time.

Official Day of Mourning

In honor of Jon Gatfield, and out of respect for his family and loved ones, the organization has declared tomorrow, Tuesday 26th of May, an official day of mourning for the pilots, organizers, and the wider gliding community.

As we take this time to pause, reflect, and remember our friend, we will observe a quiet sky. Further updates regarding the overarching status of the Italian Grand Prix will be communicated in due course.
