VIRTUAL
FAI Virtual Gliding organizes virtual competitions that simulate the experience of gliding or flying sailplanes using flight simulators. These events are organized in cooperation with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the governing body for air sports and aeronautical records.
The Virtual Sailplane Grand Prix is a specific format of virtual gliding competition inspired by the real-world Sailplane Grand Prix. The Sailplane Grand Prix is a series of prestigious gliding competitions held around the world. In the virtual version, pilots compete against each other in virtual sailplanes, following the same rules and strategies as the real-world races. The race format typically involves a fixed task with defined turnpoints that pilots must navigate, aiming to complete the course in the shortest possible time. The virtual race environment includes realistic weather conditions and variable thermals, challenging participants to make strategic decisions and exploit thermals and lift to their advantage.
Those virtual races provide an opportunity for glider enthusiasts to experience the thrill and challenges of SGP without the need for physical aircraft or real-world airfields. These virtual competitions can be accessed by pilots from different locations, promoting inclusivity and broad participation. They offer a platform for pilots to test their skills, compete against others, and improve their gliding techniques in a safe and cost-effective manner. It serves as an engaging and accessible alternative for pilots to enjoy the sport and compete in a virtual setting.
