Holighaus wins 1st Eglide race

1st race of the 5th EGlide experimental hybrid competition, with full tracking and commentaries live.

The EGlide competition is the little experimental brother of the SGP Series. It is now the 5th edition of this event where the use of electric power is allowed in flight with a so-called FES (Front Electric Sustainer) or RES (Rear Electric Self-launcher) system is installed in a glider. On a “normal” competition, using any mean of power, whatever it is thermic or electric engine, would stop the performance of the pilot right away. But in EGlide experimental competition, each pilot gets an allowance of energy in kWh he can spend without penalty. An extra buffer of few kWh is then also allowed with some (extra flight time) penalty before “outlanding” properly the pilot if too many kWh are spent. This extra usable energy can be used to skip a difficulty, or climb faster, etc… Many scenario can be used by the pilot in flight and this opens up a very interesting and unexpected performances in flight. For the second time in a row, the French Gliding National Center CNVV of St-Auban hold this competition in the Provence area. As it is still a very early development competition and IGC must build up fair spot rules, it is still a very experimental event but as rules become robust we expect a complete official FAI event in the next seasons. Sunday; 1st race, saw Tilo Holighaus (Germany) winning on Discus-2c FES and you can follow all the results of this event on SoaringSpot. You will also get some live coverage of the race on the CNVV Facebook page and on FFVP YouTube channel. Enjoy live with commentaries in French for this experimental race today at around 11:45am UTC (01:45pm CEST)
