Pavullo, 28/08/2023 — The skies above Pavullo witnessed an exhilarating race as 20 talented virtual sailplane pilots competed in the first race of the second FAI Virtual Sailplane Grand Prix. With strategic flying, tactical decisions, and impressive coordination, the pilots showcased their skills in a high-stakes race that left viewers on the edge of their seats.
The competition director, Antoine Havet, and the IGC President, Mr. Peter Eriksen, opened the event, welcoming both the pilots and the audience to the virtual sailing spectacle. The race, held under perfect weather conditions with a cloud base at 2,700 meters above sea level, promised an intense battle for the top spot.
The race kicked off with a Formula One-style regatta start, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. All 20 pilots crossed the start line simultaneously, with a maximum speed limit of 170 kilometers per hour to ensure safety and avoid collisions. Tim Kielstrup Madsen (DEN) claimed victory, executing a well-timed final glide to clinch the first-place finish. Madsen's strategic decisions throughout the race paid off, propelling him to the top of the podium.
Wiek Schoenemaekers secured a second-place finish, narrowly missing out on the top spot. David Redman secured third place, showcasing his tenacity and tactical acumen. The podium finishers demonstrated their exceptional skill and adaptability, navigating the challenges of the course to emerge triumphant.
