Varese to Host a Special SGP Event in 2027

We are thrilled to officially announce that in June 2027, Varese (ITA) will organize a Special SGP event called the “World Cup Mixed Team 20m Sailplane Grand Prix”. Hosted by the Aero Club Adele Orsi (ACAO) in partnership with the Sailplane Grand Prix Group, this groundbreaking international race will take place against the spectacular backdrop of northern Italy's alpine landscapes, introducing mixed-gender teams to sailplane competition for the very first time.

A Groundbreaking Mixed Team Concept

In a move that mirrors the inclusivity seen in the Olympic Games and other global sports, each competing team will consist of one male and one female pilot. These crews can even be formed by pilots of different nationalities.

This innovative new format has three primary goals:

  • To encourage greater female participation in competitive gliding.

  • To strengthen the global profile of the sport.

  • To highlight the importance of teamwork and strategic collaboration through a combined scoring system.

The Gliders and The Grand Prix Format

The championship will utilize the thrilling FAI Sailplane Grand Prix format, featuring up to 20 gliders racing simultaneously.

  • The Aircraft: Teams will fly 20m class double-seater sailplanes with a maximum take-off weight (MTOM) of 800 kg. Both pilots are required to hold valid sailplane and FAI competitor licenses.

  • The Racing: Competitors will line up for a simultaneous start on a 5 km line, creating a spectacular display of speed and strategy. The races will cover closed courses of approximately 200 to 300 km.

  • The Scoring: Daily tasks will be set based on the weather to maximize speed and challenge the pilots. Points will be awarded each day to the top nine teams, leading to the crowning of the overall winners at the end of the championship.

Varese: A Proven World-Class Venue

Varese is the perfect alpine setting for this event. Nestled in the Pre-Alps, the location offers stunning scenery and ideal thermal conditions. The ACAO brings 10 years of FAI Sailplane Grand Prix experience to the table, ensuring a top-tier racing environment. The courses across the Central Alps and Prealps have been specifically chosen for their spectacular views and accessibility for spectators.

Global Broadcast & Sustainable Racing

Fans won't have to miss a second of the action. High-quality media coverage will broadcast the races live to a global audience via YouTube, sports channels, and other digital platforms.

Furthermore, the 2027 race is deeply committed to environmental responsibility. We are collaborating with local partners to implement eco-friendly practices, promote renewable energy use, and minimize the event's carbon impact.

Prepare to witness a story of innovation, inclusivity, and intense flying in June 2027!
