Vitacura, Chile to Host the 13th FAI Sailplane Grand Prix Final
The FAI Sailplane Grand Prix (SGP) management team is thrilled to announce that the Club de Planeadores de Vitacura in Chile has been selected to host the 13th FAI/SGP Final. This prestigious event will take place in January 2028, bringing the world’s top sailplane pilots to one of the most breathtaking soaring locations on the planet.
The Club de Planeadores de Vitacura (CPV) presented an outstanding bid, which includes covering container transport costs from Europe to Chile for all competing gliders. The Gliding Club, located in Santiago, Chile, is one of the most prestigious and historic gliding clubs in South America. Founded in 1930, CPV has played a significant role in the development of sailplane flying in Chile, fostering a strong community of passionate pilots and hosting numerous international competitions. Situated at the foot of the Andes Mountains, the location offers spectacular soaring conditions, with strong thermals and dynamic mountain wave lift, making it an ideal location for both training and competitive racing. Over the years, Vitacura has hosted several FAI Sailplane Grand Prix (SGP) events, including a previous SGP Final, demonstrating its capability to organize world-class competitions.
The club operates from the Vitacura Airfield (ICAO: SCLC), which features modern facilities and a well-maintained infrastructure. Looking Ahead: The 13th FAI Sailplane Grand Prix Series (2026-2028)
The FAI Sailplane Grand Prix team is actively preparing the 13th SGP series, which will run throughout 2026 and 2027, culminating in the World Final in January 2028 at Vitacura.
The bidding process for qualifying events will take place in 2025, with the final deadline for bids set for October 31, 2025. The SGP final is a one-of-a-kind sporting event, where live racing is followed by thousands of sailplane fans worldwide. Over the past decade, the competition has continuously evolved, introducing innovative ways to showcase the excitement of sailplane racing.
The 2025 FAI/SGP Final at St. Auban will further push the boundaries of fan engagement, incorporating live onboard cameras and real-time pilot commentary. These enhancements will allow audiences to experience the thrill of racing powered solely by the sun like never before.
