Weather Wins the Sprint: Race 2 at Farrenberg Canceled Mid-Flight
10/08/2026 - Farrenberg, Germany - Day 2 of the FAI Sailplane Grand Prix of Germany promised a high-stakes sprint against a rapidly closing weather window. However, despite a promising start and the entire grid successfully launching, Race 2 was ultimately canceled as strong winds and approaching storm clouds overpowered the viable soaring conditions.
The Planned Task: A 273 km Sprint
The morning briefing set a tense, urgent tone. The Race Director had plotted a complex 273 km, five-leg web across the Swabian terrain and the Black Forest, an area the pilots had familiarized themselves with during Saturday's official training.
Had the race proceeded, the fleet would have navigated the following route:
Start: Farrenberg
Leg 1: Push southwest to Schramberg.
Leg 2: Weave north through Nagold.
Leg 3: Push up to Forbach.
Leg 4: Dive deep south to Neustadt-Titisee.
Leg 5 & Finish: Hook back via the Heufeld reporting point for the final glide into Farrenberg.
The Closing Weather Window
Initial conditions intel suggested a solid 2600m ceiling with workable cumulus, mirroring the early energy that drove the fleet in Race 1. However, the forecast came with a severe warning: the sky was expected to overdevelop into a thick overcast, effectively shutting down the thermals, with mid-afternoon rain threatening parts of the task area.
The tactical mandate was clear. Pilots who aggressively exploited the early lift would survive; those who hesitated would get swallowed by dead air and rain.
Safety First: The Cancellation
With the ticking clock in mind, take-offs commenced at 12:15 Local time. The gliders were towed into the sky, and the grid positioned itself for the start gate opening, scheduled for 11:30 UTC (13:30 Local time). The start was then further delayed by the Race Director.
Unfortunately, the meteorological deterioration occurred much faster than anticipated. At 14:30 LT, while the pilots were airborne and jockeying for position, the strong winds intensified and aggressive storm clouds moved directly into the task area. Recognizing that the soaring window had firmly closed and prioritizing the safety of the competitors, the race organizers made the difficult but necessary call to cancel the event at short notice.
The fleet returned safely to the Farrenberg airfield to reset and analyze the evolving forecasts.
Overall Standings Unchanged
With Race 2 scrubbed from the schedule, the overall competition standings remain entirely unaffected. Stefan Langer (SF) firmly retains his position at the top of the leaderboard, carrying forward his 10 points and the momentum from his masterful Race 1 victory. The Danish duo of Rasmus Ørskov (RX) and Peter Kvistgaard Toft (VO) continue to hold second and third place, respectively. The battle for the Farrenberg title is far from over, and the grid will be hungry to resume the chase as soon as the skies clear for Race 3.
