Starmoen Airfield was established in 1976 after a major forest fire in the area. The local flying club, Elverum Flying Club, built the first airfield in the fire area, and Norwegian Air Sports Federation has been responsible for its operation and development since 1983. At the same year the national gliding center, Ole Reistad Senter, was build up at the airfield. The development continued until the year 2000, when the facility appeared as it does today. The two gliding clubs, Elverum Flying Club and Gardermoen Gliding Club, have their permanent base here.
